This is not a cookbook for preparing easy healthy recipes in your RV or at your campsite. This is a compilation of favorite recipes of some folks who happen to be Rv'ers ?. Many recipes call for exotic ingredients and one required 15 ingredients. Not to mention the exorbitant price for a pamplet size book. I sent mine back.

The Measure of a Man: A Spiritual Autobiography (Oprah's Book Club) Review

The Measure of a Man: A Spiritual Autobiography (Oprah's Book Club)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Being a good little white boy, I knew little about Sidney, but felt respect for him as an actor due, in part, to my discovery of "The Defiant Ones" as a child. (The movie is a powerful work about racism, and I loved it.)
This spiritual autobiography is no judgmental, squeaky-clean depiction of walking with God, nor is it an in-depth detour into the tribal religions available to Sidney as a child in the Bahamas. This book is an open-hearted view of the circumstances and, more importantly, the values that guided Sidney Poitier to the pinnacle of acting. He candidly discusses his failures as husband and father. He speaks lovingly of the example his parents gave him. And he shows the power of holding to your integrity no matter the cost.
By holding to this integrity, Sidney lost some opportunities and also gained respect from the white community, while facing ridicule as a "sell-out" from his own community. What stands out in his story is his desire to bring these communities together with respect, refusing to be dragged down by the bigotry and anger of either side. He speaks powerfully, encouraging us to focus anger in a positive way.
Mr. Poitier writes in an eloquent, yet communicative style. At times, he borders on unfocused rambling, but even then he has worthy things to say. This book is a valuable discourse on never giving up on your goals, on reaching beyond yourself to be who you were truly created to be. Thank you, Sidney, for your time.

Blackbird: A Childhood Lost and Found Review

Blackbird: A Childhood Lost and Found
Average Reviews:

I was up until 4 a.m. finishing Jennifer Lauck's gripping story of her childhood. The pages seemed to turn themselves as I followed the early loss of her tenderhearted mother, her panicky father's remarriage, and her experiences at the hands of a neurotic stepmother. What makes this debut all the more impressive is Lauck's clear and compelling prose style. Early in the book, the childlike tone seems potentially grating, but the reader is quickly drawn under Lauck's spell as that voice rapidly hardens and matures in the face of a tough life. More important, there's an astonishing lack of self-pity that makes the story all the more chilling. This is not one of those horrifying stories of child abuse and molestation that, no matter how shocking, we like to think of as happening on the fringes of society. Instead, this is a straightforward recounting of life's circumstantial horrors, namely what happens to children when the people who are supposed to take care of them die and there's no one to take the adults' places. It seems too easy (and unfair) to compare her to Mary Karr, but Lauck displays the same surefootedness and narrative tautness that kept readers of "The Liars Club" enthralled. The only happy ending is her smiling author photo, and I don't know if I could have gone to sleep as dawn approached except that her acknowledgements thanked a husband and son for an unconditional love that she thought she'd never feel again.I'm thankful for Jennifer Lauck's happy adult life (and I feel the need after this glowing review to say that I don't know the woman at all), and I'm thankful as well for the talents that allowed her to turn an incredibly painful childhood into a gripping piece of literature.

Aunt Cecelia is absolutely ridiculous. Telling Jessi she can't take Squirt for a walk or go to Mallory's house. But I like how it turned out. In the end Aunt Cecelia is really ok. I liked the name Aunt Dictator! I like this book because it is just SOOOO good! I give it 5 gold stars, but if I could i'd give it 100.

The Witching Hour (Lives of the Mayfair Witches) Review

The Witching Hour (Lives of the Mayfair Witches)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
"The Witching Hour," Anne Rice's 1990 foray into witchcraft and the occult, is not really a change of pace for the uniquely gifted author more than it is a better realized creation emphasizing her strengths and obsessions. As most readers know, Rice cut her teeth with the enormously successful Vampire Chronicles including "Interview with the Vampire" and "The Vampire Lestat." With "The Witching Hour," Rice has taken a well-deserved break from the immortal lives of her witty vampire clan, creating a fascinating legend of a family of witches stretching back four centuries and two continents.
The witches, known as the Mayfairs, are connected by the haunting thread of the mysterious spirit Lasher, appearing ghost-like to a selected few, standing within the shadows of ominous trees and forming within mirrors, tears streaking his pale face. Lasher forms an eerie, if not erotic bond with the women of the Mayfair clan, providing untold riches and eventually amorous damnation. But Lasher, much like the legacy of the Mayfair family, is an exotic mystery waiting to be solved, and this intimidating responsiblity falls into the modern-day hands of Michael Curry and Rowan Mayfair. This appealing, love-struck couple, set out for New Orleans to solve the mystery and reclaim the souls of the Mayfair family.
"The Witching Hour" was eventually followed by two sequels, but it stands alone as one of Rice's greatest novels, an enthralling, complex epic filled with gothic mystery, dancing ghosts and heartbreaking irony. Her descriptions of the decayed mansion on First Street, situated in the Garden District of New Orleans, a moody, ancient home owned by the Mayfairs for over 100 years, provides some of this novels most sensual and memorable passages. This house is indeed haunted by spirits and the hovering mysteries of past tragedies, but like Shirley Jackson's classic "The Haunting of Hill House," what is lurking within the home is much more than just crying spirits of the dead.
Rice's body of work has always had an old fashioned taste for the finer things in life, from exquisite bottles of wine to antique furnishings and dusty historic paintings. She caresses these lush trappings, much like a lover embraces an old flame. And her descriptions of these tasteful adornments - clothes, artwork, china, food and even New Orleans culture, all glowing within the flame of yellow candlelight, are examples of her sensual writing style. Granted, the passages leading up to the novel's final conflict, in which Michael and Rowan begin renovating the ancient Mayfair home, move slowly, perhaps providing more architectural detail than the reader is interested in. But Rice is strategically building a growing sense of dread. Horror is going to pay a visit to this young couple, and when it eventually does, the reader's mouth will be agape.
"The Witching Hour" is a mesmerizing novel, combining comfortable elements of the English ghost story with a feather-touch dash of erotica, witchcraft and the occult. As in all Anne Rice novels, the dead will simply not go away. They lurk in the shadows of history, as they have for centuries. Time may have passed these pseudo banshees by, but their power is far reaching. Even within the shadows of skyscrapers, automobiles and computers, these timeless supernatural fears are hiding. In Anne Rice's fascinating worlds, ancient legends live and wait, and our imagination is entranced.

Karen's School Picture (Baby-Sitters Little Sister, No. 5) Review

Karen's School Picture (Baby-Sitters Little Sister, No. 5)

I first read this years ago when I was 8, sometime after I got glasses when I was 7 and I could relate to the book somewhat when Karen was teased for her glasses, I myself had pink glasses when I was younger and because Karen was proud of her glasses by the time the book ended, I tried to be too because I wanted to be just like her. My favourite parts of the book were when Karen made a list of jokes to play on Ricky, and when Kristy took her to the library to look at pictures of cartoons who also wore glasses.

True Evil: A Novel Review

True Evil: A Novel
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Hands down this was one of the best books I have read in a long time. Greg Iles does a brilliant job of writing a book that reads like a movie, the plot and scenery so realistic that I had a hard time tearing myself away from the story, reading it in three sittings despite the 500 plus page span. I would suggest not reading too much of the dust jacket as it tells the reader a lot about the story and I found to be a bit of a spoiler so I waited until the book was over to read it and realized that not knowing some of those facts made the book even better.
The main meat of the story is about the wicked way in which people decide to get away from their spouses while keeping all the money without dealing with messy and long divorce procedures. Husbands and wives no longer keen on keeping their marital vows turn to Andrew Rush, a divorce lawyer who for a price gives them eternal piece of mind; he has the answer to a perfect murder that would be their solution if they proved to be capable of paying for and keeping it confidential. Working with a brilliant doctor who induces cancer or deadly diseases in people while they have no idea about it, Andrew seeks out rich and morally corrupt people to make money off the crimes they consent to. All was going well for the evil duo until they decided to kill of a wife whose sister is an FBI agent. Alexandra Morse is the heroine whose sister dies in agony telling her something that is terrifying, the dark truth about her husband and his plot that ultimately ends in her demise.
Outraged and lusting for revenge, Alex is on a mission while working on her own to prove that her sister was murdered. Using her FBI contacts and friends who can help her solve her sister's untimely death she seeks out all other victims who have died in a similar way with any connections to Andrew Rush. Along the way she finds the next victim of the lawyer and the scientist through an unfaithful wife who was seen meeting with Rusk. She decides to confront him and hopes that he can help her frame the murderers and saves his life at the same time.
There was so much more to this story that kept me at the edge of the seat that I wish I could tell about, but it would simply give away too much. The character development is flawless and so is the dialogue in this non stop ride of a thriller. The science behind cancers and diseases is well presented and very interesting while the main heroine is as real to me as my best friend. True Evil dealt with some really bad people and the quest to catch them while engaging in an iron battle of wits.
I can't wait to read more of this author as this was a delectable and engrossing book, something that will haunt my memory for a long time. I promise that the ending will be even better than one can predict and the book will leave a deep hunger for more good reading. This story will leave any bookworm full to the brim and deeply satisfied!
- Kasia S.

Mary Higgins Clark has not failed us with this one. Pretend You Don't See Her is a captavating story that keeps you always wanting to find out what is going to happen next. At the beginning of the story we are introduced to the main character in the story Lacey Farrell. Lacey is a prominent real estate agent in the hustling city of New York. While preparing to sell an apartment in the heart of the city, Lacey witnesses the murder of her client. From their her life was turned upside down. Being forced into the witness protection program Lacey believes she would be safe. But like any good thriller the plot only thickens by her discovery of new evidence that might capture the killer. By staying involved in the case, even though being warned not too, the murderer is close on Lacey tracks to hunt her down and lay to rest anyone who might be able to tie him or her to the murder. Mary Higgins Clark's Pretend You Don't See Her is an exciting book that keeps you wanting to keep turning the page to find out what will happen next. I would recommend this book to anyone looking for a good mystery with many twists and turns that keeps the plot interesting.

Friends, Lovers, Chocolate: An Isabel Dalhousie Mystery (Isabel Dalhousie Mysteries) Review

Friends, Lovers, Chocolate: An Isabel Dalhousie Mystery (Isabel Dalhousie Mysteries)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Isabel Dalhousie, philosopher and editor of Edinburgh's highly esteemed Review of Applied Ethics, is a single woman in her early forties (of independent means), whose sense of duty and moral obligation to her fellow man keeps her busy pondering what the right thing to do is in almost every aspect of life. These musings cause her to get involved in the lives of others, sometimes finding it necessary later to apologize to one person or another for real or imagined missteps on her part. (One of the more pleasurable aspects in the Sunday Philosophy Club series is the relationship between Isabel and her housekeeper, Grace, with whom she often discusses this or that moral or social issue. In FLC, Grace finally gets Isabel to attend a séance. Quite an accomplishment on her part.)
In this book, Isabel meets Ian (it frustrates Isabel that people often only offer their first names) who has recently had a heart transplant. Ian is having some strange and unnerving experiences, which he attributes to his new heart; and the subject of cellular memory arises. He asks for Isabel's help, and, once again, she's off and running to find the answers to Ian's concerns. In the meantime, an attractive Italian arrives in Edinburgh to pursue Isabel's niece, Cat (she met him at a wedding in Italy). Cat is not interested and tries to get Tomasso and her aunt together.
In addition to her usual escapades, Isabel continues her friendship with handsome young musician, Jamie. Jamie and Cat were once an item. He still loves her, but she has moved on. Isabel battles with her own feelings toward Jamie...feelings that border on love. She finds herself jealous of people or situations that she fears will "take him away" from her.
I greatly admire Alexander McCall Smith's writing talent and what must be a vast store of personal knowledge (he must also do some research in order to impart so many snippets of knowledge along the way). I found myself a little disappointed at the outcome of a couple plotlines in this book, but I also realize that the main thrust of these Sunday Philosopher's Club stories is what goes on in Isabel Dalhousie's mind, the actions she takes as a result, and how her thoughts and actions match up with typical human behavior.

What? So Nora Roberts wants us to think that an attractive man is one with an average build, a good sense of humor, lots of imagination, and plenty of maturity?
So Nora Roberts wants us to think that an attractive woman is one with an average body, huge sense of loyalty, a high work ethic, and plenty of maturity?
So Nora Roberts wants us to think that it's romantic for a man to hide in the bathroom so he can spend the night in his love's hospital room? For a man to bribe his love's mother with a gift. To think of his love's feelings before his own.
So Nora Roberts wants us to think its romantic for a woman to wear conservative clothes, make a house a home, and tell the man she loves honestly how she feels about him.
Yes! Thanks for the break from cardboard cutout characters.

Almost Perfect (Hqn) Review

I have to agree with "readsalot", I got half way thru this book and wondered why Liz would even want this guy! Liz is really great---kind, caring, almost too good.
Ethan, on the other hand, thinks primarily about himself and his own needs and wants. Liz nails it when she says that he has only ever loved his own family. If you read the first in this series, "Chasing Perfect" then you'll know that he didn't speak to his best friend Josh for 10 years because Josh became the champion cyclist that Ethan wanted to be and couldn't because of an injury. Then he trashes Liz who he supposedly loves; greets her when she returns to Fool's Gold as though nothing had ever happened; blames HER because he didn't know about his son (inspite of the fact that she had proof that she tried to tell him twice), then trashes her to her own son. This is a love story? I was so frustrated and angry at the end I had to remind myself that this was only a work of fiction. Unless you have masochistic tendencies don't waste your time or money on this would be romance.

The Secret Review

The Secret
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Unhappy with her fast-paced Southern California lifestyle, Kate Rollins nervously walks to the garage where her car is parked late at night. She knows she already disappointed her pre-teen son David by working late on the advertising campaign rather than coming home to take him to the movies as she promised. Kate never reaches her car as a drive-by shooting leaves her in the hospital with a near death experience and just fortunate to be alive.
Kate recognizes that one of the people she seen in her near death experience is her recently deceased grandmother Nell Hart, who she never met when the woman was alive due to a family squabble. Nell left Kate some property in Lost Peak, Montana. Still frightened from her trauma and worried about David's recent behavior and whom he hangs with, Kate takes her son and relocates to Montana. Kate becomes involved with the local environmental movement and to her chagrin is attracted to Chance McLain. There is also the mystery of her grandma's death to solve.
To romance readers it is not a SECRET that Kat Martin consistently writes some of the best novels in the genre. Her latest tale is an exciting romantic suspense novel that works because of Kate, who already has a full plate, but more emotionally wrenching items pile onto her angst-laden soul. By limiting the paranormal elements, Ms. Martin capably enhances her story line while staying true to the theme. Sub-genre fans will take pleasure from this convincing story.

[...]
What I liked in this book is the first part dedicated to "Major Agers" such as genes, oxidation, toxins, sugar, overeating, hormones, UV radiation, etc. This part, consisting of about 300 pages scientifically discusses all the aging factors, and the ways of dealing with them. UV radiation is named as the "major ager", so please keep that in mind the next time you head for the beach. On the other hand the authors also point out the many benefits of sun radiation. As usual, moderation is the answer...
Not to be missed is Chapter 16, titled "The Fourteen Day You Extend Warranty Plan". It starts with the following "Daily YOU-Do List":
1. Walk thirty minutes
2. "Floss and brush the teeth that you wish to keep"
3. Take your pills (Omega-3s, vitamins, calcium supplements, aspirin, etc)
4. Sleep 7-8 hours
5. Meditate for 5 minutes
Is that all? I would never suspect it is THAT simple...
Another chapter that I liked is Chapter 12 titled "Live the Sexy Life". Wow, say that to me again! Yes, sex (love) is important for your wellbeing and keeping young. Grab the book for the explicit details...
I gave this book 4 stars. To get a 5 star longevity title check the books written by Tombak [...]

Mother of Pearl Review

Mother of Pearl
Average Reviews:

This book was a challenge to read. Haynes distinctive way of developing her characters and her long and expressive prose made me want to stop reading and move on to something that was more leisure in style. But I kept on reading. I found the book complex and thought provoking. Not only did I care about the characters but I wanted to know them and understand them in depth - to examine how many of their sides were firing (feelings, sensing, knowing, seeing, hearing and smelling - six sided women). I kept thinking of the dream of the pig and how it revealed itself to Canaan. Ripped down the middle with no insides - like Canaan racially split, a product of the time, and operating at a head level (one sideded). Most of his sides frozen and it was only when he met Grace did he begin to integrate - to make the longest trip in the world - the 18" from his head to his heart.
I finally understood as I kept reading and rereading trying desperately to follow the story and clearly understand each page that the real message for me was not to figure out what Haynes was trying to convey but to understand what the personal message was for me. Reading fiction should be a personal experience - my personal experience. There is not just one message here. Just as in my own personal life so many people, events, and things don't make sense. I often struggle to analyze and reanzlye . I become frustrated, angry and end up giving away my finite life energy to something outside of myself - something that I have no control over. There is a line from the Desiderta which says "no matter whether or not it is clear to you the Universe is unfolding as it should."So in conclusion the book's message to me was: *detach, step back and allow the flow to happen; *observe; *identify which sides are firing or misfiring as the case may be; *identify when I have been in a similar situation (s),how do I misfire? * how do I want to do it differently? * Learn, grown and move on.

In a Class by Itself Review

In a Class by Itself
Average Reviews:

Sandra Brown is one of the most accomplished writers in romance and IN A CLASS BY ITSELF follows her usual tradition in weaving magical romances with her trademark sensuality and poignancy.
Logan and Dani are a pair of high school lovers, embittered because of their separation. Parental objection posed a stumbling block for them in the past and now with Dani, gaining her independence after learning from an ill-fated marriage, she is ready to steer the charity organisation, Friends In Need with pools of donation.
Logan strikes a deal with her to lend his own property out for a summer camp on the terms that she would accompany him for a week. Dani finds herself trapped between passion and cold reality as her feelings for Logan had never once been extinguished.
Sandra Brown is a gifted writer who, with her rich descriptions takes reader on an emotional roller coaster. The chemistry between Logan and Dani is one fuelled by hot sensuality, riveted passion and unrequited love. Her stunning romance novels are nevertheless typical, but it is also through the simplicity that you find her books true-to-earth.It is at once heart-rendering in a class of its own with the stumbling blocks of life Dani and Logan had to go through.
Exquisite and compelling, this book is in a class by itself.

The Winner Review

I read this book a few years ago but it has retained it's place in my top ten ever since. This is a a wonderfully crafted story that keeps you turning the pages until the end. This was the 2nd Baldacci book I had read; the first having been The Simple Truth. Although that book was enjoyable, this one was, in my opinion, just better. Baldacci is better well known for his political thrillers and this one doesn't quite fall into that genre, which is a welcome change. Always a good thing when a writer can be diverse with his subject matter.
The story itself is interesting, and what makes it interesting is that it is sort of unique. A little far fetched that someone could fix the lottery and cook up such an elaborate scheme to control people's lives? Perhaps. But that is not something you think about while reading this book-the characters are engrossing. Particularly the character of LuAnn. You can't help but care about what happens to this woman, and no matter how much wealth is bestowed upon her, you can't help but feel for her and sympathize with her situation. She is definitely someone you can identify with, whether you are male or female. I didn't particulaly care for the character of Charlie, but it would have been nice to know a little more information about him. Jackson is a wicked and diabolical character that you just love to hate. The combination of this and an excellent storyline that keeps moving at a good pace equals a great read. I would definitely recommend this book!
