I have only one complaint with this book: I wanted to read more!
McClure's narrative grips from his first insights into the governor of Minnesota, and I couldn't put it down until I'd finished it! The narrative traces his inspiring story from humble beginnings to beating the odds in tight political races to his political status currently, along with a list of his stated positions on a number of issues relevant to a presidential run in 2012.
McClure's chronicle of Tim Pawlenty shines for two reasons: first, it is scholarly in tone, loaded with hundreds of footnotes of thorough research and respect for its subject without being a hagiography. Whatever you think about Pawlenty, once you read the book you'll realize why his name is being tossed around for president in 2012.
Second, it has a compelling portrayal of Pawlenty the man, a combination utterly "everyman" rough blue-collar roots (the title picture echoes his non-flashy style) and uncanny giftedness for governance. Facing difficult odds, T-Paw (his real nickname) overcomes time and time again. He embodies and sells a Republican conservatism packaged as serving the "Sam's Club" working class, not just the "country club" upper class. It's an all-American story, yet in McClure's hands, it's not cliché; it's inspiring, even (or perhaps because) he lets the facts tell the story.
My only problem: it's too short. With more research, more analysis, more pictures of Pawlenty growing up, and twice as many pages, McClure could have made a full-blown autobiography of the first rate. Now that I've tasted a little about Pawlenty, I want more, and McClure seems ready to make the first full-length bio of T-Paw from St. Paul.

"We are the party of Sam's Club, not just the country club."These words define Tim Pawlenty as a politician.By the time he spoke them at the 2001 State Republican Convention, he was already well on his way to transforming Minnesota's political landscape. The goal was to re-brand the Republican Party with a type of "contemporary conservatism," broadening the party's base without compromising conservative values.Pawlenty accomplished his goal.He served as governor from 2002 to 2010, successfully shifting Minnesota from center-left to center-right.It's no surprise party leaders vetted him for Vice President in 2008 and continue to mention his name for national roles. J. A. McClure tells the story of Pawlenty's humble beginnings in South St. Paul, his action-packed political campaigns, his accomplished tenures in the Minnesota House and governor's office, and his prospects for a national career.Drawing from hundreds of articles and interviews, McClure presents a thorough and fair introduction to a man destined for leadership.
