This is a large book approx. A4 size. My copy contains over 760 pages although I see from the product information others are advertised at 512 pages. I think the most important comment I can make is that buyer ensures he gets the book which is relevant to his own country. Clearly the laws in, for example, the USA are very different from those in the UK. My review is centred on the UK version - although most of my comments will apply equally to other versions as well. Whilst there some illustrations and several cartoons, the work is mostly informative text. I did feel considerable space was wasted by a format which included very wide margins - often left empty.
My own particular interest at this moment in time is the subject of plagiarism and, I write these words just as jail sentences have been handed down to some who believed they were entitled to use the copyrighted material of others in their own works. I am an underwater photo-journalist, author and shipwreck historian. As such, I spend countless hours on detailed research before finally producing my own account of the vessel in question. Along the way, my work has been plagiarised by individuals, books, websites and magazines! In short, it has been stolen by those who seek a quick route to producing the information, we who understand research, have spent those many weeks and months in accumulating - often at great expense.
One would have thought, therefore, the word "Plagiarism" would have appeared in the Index and that this book would then offer suitable advice. But not so! Furthermore, plagiarism is not even mentioned under the overall heading of "Photography" - and we all have cameras and take pictures for which we retain our very own copyright. It is impossible for me to establish what else is missing from an otherwise excellent work - if only because I am not able to think of every possible subject that "should" be covered.
Nevertheless, I earnestly believe a copy of this book ought to be regarded as essential for the modern household as a fridge or washing machine. It allows you to "Know your Rights" in the event of whatever problems life wishes to throw in your direction. Perhaps, more importantly for many, it is also a layman's guide to those State Benefits to which you may or may not be entitled.
There are times when we all consider taking legal advice and then decide against taking any action on the grounds of the likely expense! A copy of this book, however, would at the very least, point you in the right direction - at no further expense beyond the purchase price. Not only that, if you already have a pressing problem, then the book will have paid for itself just as soon as you read the advice given.
