the ben brewer story she told in class wasn't even scary and people freaked out. She believes her deceased great grandfather ben lives on the fourth floor and wants to learn more so she and kristy do research and find his diary and learn some creepy things that freak her out during halloween but they all turn out to be coincidences. But someone needs to tell karen that ghosts aren't all evil and huant you. When somene dies they may be gone physically but their spirit still is watching over you and that's not necessarily a creepy thing at all.

it's nice karen wanted to feel good about herself and went to the hairdresser's, but it's SO UNREALISTIC that the hair dresser would cut her hair all wrong, especially when karen is just a little kid and she gave the hairdresser a picture of the haircut she really wanted!! But it's still a good read, and though hannie was being mean, karen was really cute when she started sneaking makeup to school, and hannie's pretend wedding to scott was unrealistic but adorable. It's a nice read if you're about 7 or 8, the age I was when I bought this book

I first read this years ago when I was 8, sometime after I got glasses when I was 7 and I could relate to the book somewhat when Karen was teased for her glasses, I myself had pink glasses when I was younger and because Karen was proud of her glasses by the time the book ended, I tried to be too because I wanted to be just like her. My favourite parts of the book were when Karen made a list of jokes to play on Ricky, and when Kristy took her to the library to look at pictures of cartoons who also wore glasses.

Kristy and the Secret of Susan (Baby-Sitters Club) Review

Kristy and the Secret of Susan (Baby-Sitters Club)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The book is based partly on the author's experience as a therapist with autistic children during the summer she was in college. At the back of the book Ann Martin mentions this and the book she wrote before The Babysitters Club series, entitled, Inside Out.
Introducing a character with autism in The Babysitter series was a good idea, just presented in a way I did not like. Having a child with autism should never be a secret. This book is a start by educating children about those with autism.
The premise of The Babysitters Club is to meet three times a week for thirty minutes to get calls for sitting jobs. Each of the members has a title and function. Kristy and The Secret of Susan is written in the third person, by Kristy. Kristy is President of the Babysitters Club, thirteen years old and in the eighth grade.
There is a Babysitters Club notebook that contains the writeup of all the jobs they do. They learn how their friends solve problems and what is going on with the kids they watch.
I often found myself looking back to the beginning recap on each of the members since it was confusing to recall the sibling names for all the girls.
The reason for me perusing The Babysitters Club #32, Kristy and The Secret of Susan was due to the topic of autism, so I tried to keep track of all the members.
One day Mrs. Felder called to get someone to sit Susan. Susan went to a special school far away, currently home for one month before heading off to another new school. Mrs. Felder wanted a sitter for three days a weeks from 3:30 - 5:30, so she could have a break. Mrs. Felder mentioned to Kristy on the phone that Susan was autistic.
At the Babysitters Club meeting the girls discussed what autistic meant. Kristy looked the word up in the dictionary, which mentioned Childhood Schizophrenia. When checking that word out Kristy became more confused, "withdrawing from reality".
I liked that the storyline had them check the dictionary. In fact that was the first place I looked when I read "autistic like" in a report seven years ago relating to my own son.
Right away I had mixed feelings about Mrs. Felder. It did not seem right to me as the single parent to two boys on the autism spectrum that this parent needed so many breaks during a one-month period her eight year old autistic daughter was home. I felt this was the wrong message and would have preferred if she needed to keep up with some obligations she had year-long. It seemed a bit drastic for respite time with the time-period chosen.
We learn that Susan plays the piano and remembers dates. She can sing and recite music she just heard, but does not speak. Although not mentioned within the pages of The Babysitters Club, Kristy and The Secret of Susan these are savant skills that affect about 10% of the autistic population.
Susan is in her own world, she wrings her hands, clicks her tongue and rarely makes eye contact. Her yard is fenced in for she gallops back and forth. My son is also eight and he has been skipping merrily along for several years now and does not speak either.
The month went by quickly and then it was time for Kristy to help Mrs. Felder pack for Susan and say goodbye. This was when Kristy met Mr. Felder and told him of her dream to keep Susan home with them and make friends in the neighborhood.
Mr. Felder explained to Kristy about the special school and how they used music to get through to kids. It was also shared that Mrs. Felder was going to have another baby.
Kristy thought about being a teacher working with special kids like Susan. The Babysitters Club, Kristy and The Secret of Susan covers fifteen chapters within 145 pages. It is a quick read for a pre-teen or teenager. It might be helpful for a sibling to see how others in their age group learn about autism through trial and error.
Although the reader had some insight into the special talents of Susan, it was not really made clear why she needed the special school far away from home. It almost seemed like since Mrs. Felder was having another baby that they shipped off Susan so they could be the family they had wanted.
This book is from 1990 and attitudes were different regarding disabilities and autism.

Mallory and the Mystery Diary (Baby-Sitters Club, 29)
Average Reviews:

This book was great! It is about a diary Mallory finds in Stacey's attic. The diary was a girl called Sophie's in the 1800's. She told of how her mother had died at the birth of her baby brother. Her rich grandfather then hated her father and blamed him for stealing a painting he had of his daughter. The diary didn't say anything about who was the culprit, only that Sophie was sure it wasn't her father. Mallory then found the old man's confession about covering up the portrait and then went on to find the atchual painting. An exelent read.

Dawn on the Coast (Baby-Sitters Club) Review

Dawn on the Coast (Baby-Sitters Club)

Dawn used to be a California girl until her parents' divorce. Then her mother packed up Dawn and her brother Jeff to move back her old hometown in Connecticut. Eventually Dawn made friends and a new life for herself but her brother did not and returned to California making the family even more divided than before. As the story opens Dawn is leaving to spend her spring break back in California with her father and brother and her old friends. Before long she finds that in her heart she is still a California girl but that she also loves her new life in Connecticut which leaves her with a huge problem - should she get on the plane at the end of her vacation or not?
This is #23 in the popular BABYSITTERS CLUB series. The books in this series focus on a group of young teenage girls in a small Connecticut town. Each book in the series focuses on one of the girls although each one appears to some extent. Each chapter opens with a handwritten note (journal entry, postcard, letter etc) by one of the girls commenting on the upcoming events. The series overall has several ongoing arcs that are moved along in a chronological manner but each book could be read and enjoyed independently or out of series order. The reading level of this series is 4th grade and appeals primarily to 3rd through 5th grade girls. The stories themselves are well written, the characters are believeable and appealing, remaining consistent throughout the series. The situations the girls find themselves in are realistic and dealt with in a reasonable manner.
The series is a bit dated at this point - this particular book was written in 1989 - so that a young reader today might be a bit confused by some of the references to 'current' movies or the relaxed air travel of twenty years ago. Overall though the story itself still speaks to problems faced by many young girls today.

Good-Bye Stacey, Good-Bye (Baby-Sitters Club) Review

The book "Goodbye, Stacey, Goodbye (BSC #13)" was the first book in the series that I owned and I absolutely loved it. My copy is all tattered, torn, and taped to keep the cover on. That's how much I loved it and reread it. It started my obsession with the series, which will never be over, I don't think, even though the final book has been written. This series is too good to forget about, ever, even when I'm 93. I think I'll always read these books, because I feel like I'm a part of it. They are written so well that I understand the book so much. I love the BSC so much. It has made me a lover of reading. I feel like I've grown up with all the babysitters (not a spoiler so I cannot name names).
This series is such a wonderful series to get hooked on.

I liked this! It was a very real portrayal of the struggles to adjust to life in a stepfamily. Dawn discovers that being friends with someone & LIVING with that person are two different things. Dawn & Mary Anne each have different habits, like Dawn is a vegetarian & Mary Anne is a junk-food & meat lover. They discover that the CAN'T share a room & nearly drive each other to the brink of insanity when Dawn wants the radio on & Mary Anne needs complete silence to study. I thought it was funny & creative how Dawn thinks up a way to scare Mary Anne, who still believes in ghosts, into a near-faint! Poor Mary Anne! All in all...realistic.

The Ghost at Dawn's House (The Baby-Sitters Club #9)
Average Reviews:

ISBN 0590435086 - Martin's The Baby-Sitters Club series as a whole is great reading and The Ghost at Dawn's House misses the 5 star mark by mere sentences.
Maybe it's just her imagination. After all, there's stormy weather and scary stories and they DO live in an old house... so maybe Dawn's not really hearing noises behind her wall - but she thinks she is, and sets out to find the secret passage that she's sure is there. When she finds it, the mystery just begins. What, or who, is making those noises? Is her house really haunted? If so, who's haunting it and why?
In the meantime, the BSC is dealing with their feelings about the Perkinses, who now live in Kristy's old house, and Nicky Pike is feeling left out because the other Pike boys don't want to play with him, so he finds a special place to call his own and takes to disappearing on his sitters!
The ending was incomplete, to me, leaving too much unanswered. Unfortunately, if I go into it, I'll give away too much! I do hope Martin revisits Dawn's ghost and her secret passage, if only to clean up the unfinished threads of this book. Even so, BSC fans will enjoy the story, as always!

Claudia and the Sad Good-Bye (Baby-Sitters Club)
Average Reviews:

claudia and her grandmother mimi were so close. She would come from school everyday and together they would drink 'special tea' in beautiful japanese tea cups as displayed on the cover and mimi was the only one who understood claudia in her family. Mimi had a stroke recently but was doing fine for some time but her health begins to decline in this book and she's had to be rushed to the hospital a few times after collapsing and was sent home, but after being sent back a second time and saying she was doing fine she passed away peacefully in her sleep. Claudia experienced so many emotions that she couldn't grasp or understand throughout the events following the death. She felt sad, angry, abandoned and so forth and those feelings are real. Her family helped her out at the end though come to terms with it and it made me cry too cause my great grandmother passed away when I was a kid and I remember not knowing how to feel myself, happy cause she was in no more pain and in a better place, or sad cause i will never see her again and stuff like that.

The Truth About Stacey, Collector's Edition (Baby-Sitters Club, No. 3)
Average Reviews:

I don't know if series author Ann M. Martin either personally has disabilities herself, and/or knows the real-life struggles of people who do, but this is an unflinchingly realistic account of what it is like to be a teenager with a disability in America. Years after reading it in a fourth grade English class, I remain impressed at the storyline candor.
Sure, there are laws on the books then protecting Stacey's access to education...etc but her real challenges come from insensitive peers. A friend had liked Stacey until she found out that Stacey had diabetes during a sleepover, and then ended their friendship abruptly. Having endured identical torturous experience for my own disability, I appreciate the unflinchingly honest (and even descriptively blunt) account of what this reality is like.
Likewise, the issue of well-meaning but over protective parents are brought up. Stacey's minor status is compounded by the fact that she is also a person with a disability. Rushing to 'help' her with something they do not personally themselves have, parental actions frustrate Stacey. She loves them dearly, but wants her life to be much more than hospitals and doctors---Stacey only wants to be a 'normal' kid.
Yes, this subject area might go beyond standard children's fare, but taking note of the human effects of discrimination and 'difference' are important. Even if they do not have disabilities themselves, young adults should read this book to realize that teasing other people because of their disability does hurt everybody.
