Sheriff Gavin O'neal has been interested in waitress Valerie Raines since she came to town a few months ago and when she finds herself without a place to live he gladly offers her a room in his house in the meantime. Valerie is attracted to the sheriff but a shameful secret keeps her from getting involved with anyone. She has a letter in her possession revealing she is the great great granddaughter of town legend Jessamine Golden and clues to where the gold and answers to her families questions are buried. When their attraction proves overwhelming, Valerie and Gavin are soon involved but she knows she has to reveal her past if there is any chance for them at all. When circumstances point to the unknown murderer being a woman, Gavin's collegues in the Texas Cattleman's Club question whether Valerie can be involved.
This was a sweet passionate ending to the series not quite as edgy as a couple of the other books but very good indeed.

If only his statement were true, Valerie Raines could have rested easy. But living in Gavin's home made her aware of her secret, vengeful motives for being in town, and she couldn't allow her attraction to the handsome sheriff sway her from her purpose.

But Gavin's not-so-subtle seduction soon exhausted Valerie's resolve until finally, she was in his bed. Now it was even more imperative that she keep her secrets because she knew her lawman lover would never forgive her betrayal. And not even the risk of losing Gavin could stop her from seeking the justice she craved.
