(More customer reviews)"Echoes" by Danielle Steel, is a wonderfully moving and emotional story of a family of strong and caring women, who for generations seem destined to 'echo' the trials and triumphs of their predecessors. It is a saga so filled with characters that attracted me to their inner strength, their courage and magnetic charms, and had me living the danger and hardships of their times. There were times I actually found myself with a lump in my throat or my heart beating faster, as they devoted themselves, sometimes putting their lives on the line for what they loved and believed in.
In 1915, as War began to loom, and her brothers were off fighting, Beata Wittgenstein, a young, beautiful, intelligent German Jewish woman, fell in love with a handsome and caring French officer. Both loved their families and their countries, but the love they had for each other had no equal. Defying their parents,their traditions, and being cut out of the families, never to be allowed contact again, they sought comfort in each other's arms and married. Not an easy life, they managed to make a home and life for themselves and their two beautiful daughters. Beata converting to Catholicism for her husband, but never forgetting her own deep roots.
It was years later, when a second World War loomed that she anguished as her family disappeared into the horrible fate awaiting them by the Nazis. (More customer reviews)Was everything just an accident, or perhaps fate? Danielle Steele's Accident is one of Steele's better books. If you want a book you absolutely can't put down, this is the book for you! Accident is a powerful, and yet triumphant novel, of lives that were shattered and changed by one devastating moment.
With Page's husband being a business man he is not home a lot but Page Clarke feels blessed with her, what seems to be, happy family and comfortable marriage. They have a house near San Francisco and she keeps busy looking after their seven-year-old son, Andy, and their teenage daughter, Allyson.
Allyson, who is fifteen, lies to her mom and instead of going out with her friend Chloe, the girls go out with two older high school boys. But a Saturday night that was supposed to be fun doesn't quite end up that way. Instead, there is an awful "accident" that takes place when their car collides head-on with another car driven by the mayor's wife.
At the hospital, Page finds Chloe's divorced father, Trygve. She is unable to locate Brad so her and Trygve lean on each other throughout the the long hours at the Marion hospital. Will Allyson live? Will any of them? Were the teenagers drinking? Using drugs? Who was at fault? And where is her husband? Without Brad by her side Page feels her life start to come apart and at the same time is trying to deal with the fact that her daughter may not live and if she does, she may never be the same again.
I read this novel in 5 days; no joke! This novel is impossible to put down. The beginning brought about a relaxing view of Page's life and makes the reader interested in finding out more. Then, all of the sudden, fate occurs and the rest of the story just grabs your heart right away. It leaves you wondering, "What happens next?" and you find yourself not being able to put this novel down. And the end of the novel makes it worth reading even more! I enjoyed reading this book and would even read it again.
Steele's character development was once again, great. Every character in her books can be closely related in someway to our own lives. She did an exceptional job getting into the head of Page in Accident. Her character is admired by the reader. She was a very strong character and it played an important role in the other character's lives in the book.
Accident has a plot that is definitely believable. A tragic car accident, a marriage gone wrong, the pain of a little boy who feels like his life is falling apart, and the heart ache of a mother who is trying desperately to hold her family, plus her own life, together, makes up a great, touching story. Even the emotions felt in this book were so down to earth and real with today's society. The plot was developed and every situation and circumstance made sense and ended in triumph by the end of the story. I didn't get confused at all and her sentence and word structure made complete sense.
Accident was an inspiring novel that shows just how many people are affected by one tragic accident and how they survive it. Danielle Steel makes it seem as though the characters lives are similar to our own... and who live, like the rest of us, in a world where everything can change in a single moment. I recommend this book to anyone who is looking for a truly inspirational novel to read and not be able to put down. Danielle Steele definitely earns 5 stars in this novel.

Honeysuckle Summer (Sweet Magnolias) Review

(More customer reviews)Ms. Woods generally writes a good solid story, but this one contains references to previous stories in the series that are irritating and distracting. I don't want a rehash of what the previous books and their characters did, I've already read that.
I found the use of agoraphobia a trifle contrived and having yet another character with an eating disorder--the subject already covered and recovered in a previous tale or two--makes me wonder if Ms. Woods has lost her imagination.
Those things aside, the characters were fairly strong representations, and though not the best story in the Sweet Magnolias series, it was palatable.

(More customer reviews)Answered Prayers is the story of Faith Madison, the stylish, perfect housewife and mother to her husband Alex and daughters Eloise and Zoe. She runs into an old childhood friend, Brad, at her stepfathers funeral. Soon the two are emailing each other multiple times a day and calling each other whenever they aren't emailing. Faith decides to go back to school and maybe become a lawyer. This causes major tension between her and Alex and their two daughters. When Faith returns to school the tension builds and thus the story builds too.
This book was extremely bland. This was almost like reading The Kiss. Except in this book there is no car crash that land Faith and Brad in the hospital. It seems like Ms. Steel uses the same story line in all of her books lately. Faith had absolutely no backbone and Alex was just a complete jerk (like the husband in The Journey). Eloise was nothing short of a witch. Zoe was a spot of sunshine in this book. The character of Brad was a bit too perfect. Always at the phone or computer whenever Faith needed him. This aspect I found extremely odd. Brad is a busy lawyer yet has time to email Faith more than once a day and he's always at his computer or phone whenever she writes or calls.
Ms. Steels latest books have lacked the spark of her earlier works. She tends to repeat herself constantly. The book would be half the size if she wouldn't repeat herself so much. In this book she concentrates on Jack, Faith's deceased brother, way too much. He is brought up in the book as if he's still alive. The whole church aspect of the storyline was off too. Faith, the dedicated churchgoer, only went to church it seemed to light candles. Again, this whole part of the storyline just didn't seem to fit into the story right.
To sum it up....boring book, same as all other books written by Ms. Steel in the past few years. I would recommend revisiting one of her earlier books or if you must read this one, borrow it from the library. Don't spend your hard earned money on this.

(More customer reviews)This is the first Danielle Steel book I've read. It was really easy to "get in touch" with the characters in this book. Great plot, great characters, GREAT WRITING! For some people, the subject matter may not sit well - some parts of the story are graphic in content. You'll definitely need to keep a box of tissues next to the bed while you're reading this one. It brought tears to my eyes. Very touching story but sadly, some people are like Grace Adams in the real world. It really makes you step back and take a look at things like child abuse and domestic violence. The message this book gave to me was, "If Grace Adams can make it through what she's been through, so can I!!"

(More customer reviews)I put off other things on my weekend to finish this book because I was so involved in it, and I've been recommending it to other readers since finishing it. This book was more beautiful to me than The Joy Luck Club, but it took me a little longer to get into the book and realize how amazing it was.
The plot is summarized well on Amazon. While reading, I had a little trouble getting into Kwan's Miss Banner previous-lifetime stories. I, like Olivia, thought Kwan was a kooky dreamer. Of course, her stories have a deeper meaning, and I urge you to stick with them so see Tan's beautiful resolution of the relationship between Olivia and Kwan.
In the beginning of the book, I thought Olivia knew herself the best, and that Kwan was just an overly-emotional meddler. As the book progressed, Tan convined me of the depth of Kawn's character, and my feelings about everyone in the novel changed. Tan is a masterful storyteller for taking me in this journey of discovery.
This history of China is well-treated in this novel, and I wanted to learn more about the Taiping Rebellion when I finished. Don't be put off if you don't like historical fiction, though, because I'm not usually a fan, but I found myself entirely wrapped up in this.

(More customer reviews)This has been one of my favorite Danielle Steel books for a long time. I really enjoy her early works the best, and the characters seem to be more realistic, though their struggles are heartwrenching and devastating. This one is no exception. It's hard enough to lose a spouse or a child, but to lose both... then have to raise a handicapped child that will never meet his father or sister... and to do this all alone... well, all I can say is Danielle Steel takes real life tragedies, and pushes them to find out how much her characters can take... then pushes them a little more. This one will have you crying for the devastating loss, then crying for the heartwarming mother-son relationship. There is so much more to this story, and anyone that has ever read Danielle Steel will know that her stories take you on a roller coaster ride, and make you walk away a different person than the one you were before.

(More customer reviews)While my two favorite books by Sandra Brown are The Witness and Exclusive, this book runs a close second in the suspense, with a little bit of romance thrown in, category.
Hammond Cross is a county solicitor with aspirations of becoming the next District Attorney in Charleston, South Carolina. And, he should, because he is honest and ethical -- two traits that should be sought after in this position. Hammond's semi-downfall in this book is his attraction to the beautiful Dr. Alex Ladd who unfortunately is suspected in the murder of Lute Pettijohn, a wealthy, local businessman. Hammond and Alex spend an unbelievable night together and that night of "passion" becomes Alex' "alibi".
Other characters enter into this scenario especially Steffi Mundell -- who wants to be the next county prosecutor, Rory Smilow -- the chief detective and ex-brother in law of the murdered man and Hammond's own father who had some disreputable dealings with Lute Pettijohn himself. While many of the characters could have reasons of their own for killing Lute, the prime suspect is still Alex Ladd. Hammond Cross can't believe this is true and sets out to prove that someone he feels this strongly about could not possibly be a murderer.
Sandra Brown weaves a tale of corruption, romance and tension. You'll be on pins and needles until the conclusion of this novel.

Greg Iles does a brilliant job of writing a book that reads like a movie, the plot and scenery so realistic that I had a hard time tearing myself away from the story, reading it in three sittings despite the 500 plus page span. I would suggest not reading too much of the dust jacket as it tells the reader a lot about the story and I found to be a bit of a spoiler so I waited until the book was over to read it and realized that not knowing some of those facts made the book even better.
The main meat of the story is about the wicked way in which people decide to get away from their spouses while keeping all the money without dealing with messy and long divorce procedures. Husbands and wives no longer keen on keeping their marital vows turn to Andrew Rush, a divorce lawyer who for a price gives them eternal piece of mind; he has the answer to a perfect murder that would be their solution if they proved to be capable of paying for and keeping it confidential. Working with a brilliant doctor who induces cancer or deadly diseases in people while they have no idea about it, Andrew seeks out rich and morally corrupt people to make money off the crimes they consent to. All was going well for the evil duo until they decided to kill of a wife whose sister is an FBI agent. Alexandra Morse is the heroine whose sister dies in agony telling her something that is terrifying, the dark truth about her husband and his plot that ultimately ends in her demise.
Outraged and lusting for revenge, Alex is on a mission while working on her own to prove that her sister was murdered. Using her FBI contacts and friends who can help her solve her sister's untimely death she seeks out all other victims who have died in a similar way with any connections to Andrew Rush. Along the way she finds the next victim of the lawyer and the scientist through an unfaithful wife who was seen meeting with Rusk. She decides to confront him and hopes that he can help her frame the murderers and saves his life at the same time.
There was so much more to this story that kept me at the edge of the seat that I wish I could tell about, but it would simply give away too much. The character development is flawless and so is the dialogue in this non stop ride of a thriller. The science behind cancers and diseases is well presented and very interesting while the main heroine is as real to me as my best friend. True Evil dealt with some really bad people and the quest to catch them while engaging in an iron battle of wits.
I can't wait to read more of this author as this was a delectable and engrossing book, something that will haunt my memory for a long time. I promise that the ending will be even better than one can predict and the book will leave a deep hunger for more good reading. This story will leave any bookworm full to the brim and deeply satisfied!

(More customer reviews)This is my first Catherine Coulter contemporary that I have read, I have all of her romances. And to be perfectly honest, I wouldn't have read this one if she hadn't e-mailed me and asked me to. I did enjoy it. The main characters were captivating and interesting. The plot was fast moving and kept you guessing "who done it" until it was revealed and then it was "when will he strike for the kill" that kept you reading till the end. I read this book in 6 hours and couldn't put it down. A definate good read!

Impossible Review

(More customer reviews)Every time I read a DS book---and I have read them all--I tell myself "this is the last one". But then I'm always willing to give her one more try. As I've written before, her books are slipping--as someone else has said. I'm beginning to think that she's not doing the writing anymore. It's not a fraction of the caliber of "Message from Nam" or "Thurston House". She now repeats herself over and over again, uses poorly constructed sentences and runs thoughts together as a child would do. Her grammar is terrible. And the stories are becoming so fluff and too similar that it's not fun to read them anymore. So perhaps she has finally lost me as a loyal reader.
It's the story about Liam and Sasha---with a 9 year age difference who break up and get back together over and over. DS is constantly reminding the reader of their ages and their past history------it's boring and mundane. It's a waste of time to read these books unless you're looking for a quick read without any substance.
Danielle, please write better and go back to meaty story ideas like in the "good old days" and wow us with your research and ways to capture us with the story. I miss the old style and will not read another book until I hear they have improved.

Tara Road (Oprah's Book Club) Review

(More customer reviews)I am giving TARA ROAD three stars because it is not my favorite Maeve Binchy novel - I don't think the secondary characters were developed as well as in some of her other books. Yes, the story has elements of a soap opera, but please don't compare it to anything written by Danielle Steele. I have never been able to get through one chapter of any of her books that have come my way. Okay, I did read MESSAGE FROM NAM, she must have had a ghost-writer. Excuse me, I digress. TARA ROAD is an enjoyable read. The main character, Ria, changes throughout the book, and I really liked her. She seemed very real to me, like a good friend. My only complaint about this book is at times it was a bit slow, and not 100% believable, but so what, it's a novel. The story itself is actually very inspiring, about friendship as well as self-reliance. I definitley recommend TARA ROAD to all Maeve Binchy fans, and for those who've never experienced Maeve, if you like good stories with characters who become like friends, please give her books a try. However, for first time readers of Maeve, you might want to start with ECHOES or EVENING CLASS, which are two of her best!

If you haven't read the first in the series, you may be a little lost in keeping the characters straight. Gap Creek : The Story Of A Marriage (Oprah's Book Club) Review

(More customer reviews)This is a novel about a very poor young couple living in the Carolina mountains after the Civil War and their hard, hard lives. The work of day to day living back then was mind-boggling! The characters go through many trials and tribulations - fire, flood, extreme poverty, deaths of loved through and clean up after a flood; childbirth. This book reminded me of the book "Christy" and "Strangers in the Forest". Very realistic, very well written, amazing to us modern day folk. I only wish it had been longer, I hope there is a sequel featuring the young couple.

In the fourth installment of the popular Women's Murder Club series, Lieutenant Lindsay Boxer (the head of San Francisco Police Department's Homicide Division) is fighting to save her career after she is accused in a wrongful death suit, and at the same time struggling to help solve a series of grisly murders that have shaken the small town of Half Moon Bay, where she has retreated to chill out while on administrative leave from the SFPD.
As the story unfolds Lieutenant Boxer is hot on the trail of a couple of suspects that she and her partner believe are responsible for a recent string of seedy motel murders. Turns out the suspects are two very youthful teenage siblings, and in the process of apprehending these two, Boxer is forced to use deadly force to defend herself and her partner. When all is said and done, Boxer's partner is critically wounded and unconscious, Boxer herself has been hit twice, a 15 year old girl is dead, and her 13 year old brother is paralyzed for life from the neck down. Was it a legitimate use of deadly force? Not in the minds of the parents it wasn't. And the media has already found her guilty without the benefit of trail!
In Half Moon Bay someone is killing local residents in a gruesome fashion reminiscent of an unsolved homicide from Lieutenant Boxer's earliest days on the force. She is supposed to be laying low in the sleepy little seaside resort, gearing up the trail of her life, but when the killing starts, she finds herself hard pressed to remain disinterested and unengaged. Before long she is swept up in the investigation and a target for murder herself!
A great weekend read. The chapters just fly by! Also recommended are the other three stories in the Women's Murder Club series: 1st to Die, 2nd Chance, and 3rd Degree. Be the first on your block to collect all four books!

His has written some terrific psychological thrillers and a couple of less acclaimed novels, such as "When the Bough Breaks" which might have been best left in the closet. However, James Patterson's fans will not be the least disappointed in his latest masterpiece. It could not be further from the action packed, Alex Cross, crime novels, but it is every bit as worthy of praise and acclaim.
Katie Wilkinson, a book editor, has been left by her boyfriend, Matt. Matt, however, gives Katie a diary written by his first wife, Suzanne, for his son Nicholas. As Katie reads through the diary, she is not only compassionately drawn to Suzanne but develops a better understanding of Matt. The story that evolves will capture your heart and will long be remembered after the final page has been read. You will laugh and you will cry. The book is on the same par as "The Bridges of Madison County" and "Message in a Bottle." The readers will be pleasantly surprised at the new creative ability of Patterson in this sure to be best seller.
